SPECIAL MEETING OF
BOARD OF EDUCATION

WEDNESDAY, June 21, 2006

The special meeting of the West Franklin USD #287 Board of Education was held Wednesday, June 21, 2006 at the Pomona High School Multi-Purpose Room in Pomona, Kansas.  

Board members present were:   Neal Baker, Keith Milliken (6:25 pm), Randy Hermreck, Sheila Anderson, Mary Ann Parkin, Janie Dillon, and Nancy Reed.   Administrators present were:   Board Clerk Teresa Hawkins and Principals Royce Powelson, Rick Smith, Eric Koppes, Susan Wildman, Michael Dorst, Curriculum Director Mary Schleicher, and Curriculum Director Andy Azwell.   Superintendent Dr. Susan Myers was not in attendance due to a death in the family.   Also present were:   Bob Boldra, Jodi Boldra, Merritta Combs, Bill Lloyd, and David Staley.  

The meeting was called to order at 6:00 pm by President, Neal Baker.

Neal Baker turned the meeting over to Patrick Dunn, IBB Mediator.

The board had in-depth discussion on combining as many options as possible, and then prioritizing that list.   They were to also pick their top three options to begin working on.

Options

1. Reconfigure the district
2. Offer a broader curriculum (electronic, advanced & electives)
3. Explore options with other districts
4. Improve teacher incentives & salaries
5. Develop a plan to effectively use district space
6. Put both high schools on the same schedule
7. Prioritize extra curricular activities & assess cost
8. Offer early graduation options
9. Four day week

The board took a 10 minute break at 7:55 pm

The board discussed the above nine options and decided on the three to begin work on.   Those options were: 1, 2 & 4

Option 1 – Reconfigure the district

1.  Combine classes
2. Combine schools
3. Reduction in force
4. Assess costs (capital & general)
5. 3 possible plans
1. All members of a grade level at same facility
2. 1 high school and 2 K-8
3. 1 high school, 1 junior high (7-8 or 6-8) & 2 K-5 or 6
6. For all plans utilize principle of uniform class size

Dr. Myers is to explore all the above options and put a plan together for all three of the possible plans and show how each one will work.

Next meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, July 19, 2006 at 6:00 pm in the Pomona High School multi-purpose room.

Public comment session began at 7:54 pm.   There were no public comments.

President Neal Baker adjourned the meeting at 7:55 pm.
