SPECIAL MEETING
BOARD OF EDUCATION
WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 15, 2006
The special meeting of the West Franklin USD #287 Board of Education was held Wednesday, February 15, 2006, at the Pomona High School Multi-Purpose Room in Pomona, Kansas.
Board members present were: Neal Baker, Keith Milliken, Janie Dillon, Randy Hermreck, and Nancy Reed. Administrators present were: Superintendent Susan Myers, Board Clerk Teresa Hawkins and Principals Rick Smith, Royce Powelson, Eric Koppes, and Susan Wildeman. Also present were many staff members, students, and community members.
The meeting was called to order at 6:03 pm by President, Neal Baker.
Neal Baker turned the meeting over to Patrick Dunn, IBB Mediator.
Mr. Dunn reviewed with the board the Principles Underlying Consensus and PASTT Model. He also worked with them on forming Problem Statements.
Mr. Dunn and the board reviewed the meaning of the following:
Consensus: 1) Everybody agreeing on 1 alternative 2) Don’t have to agree, but find one alternative that is fair.
Advantages: 1) Group decision 2) Stronger acceptance 3) Faster implementation 4) Resistance decreased 5) Everyone has been heard 6) No winners & losers, only problem solvers
Guidelines: 1) Active listening 2) Encourage participation 3) Share ideas and information 4) Don’t bargain and trade support 5) Don’t vote to reach consensus
Standouts: 1) People who don’t agree 2) Responsibilities – stay involved 3) State why you disagree 4) Listen to alternatives and suggest
Mr. Dunn had the board participate in several exercises to help with coming to a consensus and forming issue statements.
Board took a 5 minute bread at 7:03 pm

Are there political problems with this decision
If so, can it be reworked?
“Will this option stand the test of formal approval?”
The next two meetings have been set for Wednesday, March 1 and Wednesday, March 8, 2006 at 6:00 pm in the Pomona High School multi-purpose room..
Homework assignment for board members to bring to the next meeting: Develop a list of the issues they are dealing with.
Mr. Dunn began the public comment session at 7:52 pm and he resided over this session as moderator.
President Neal Baker adjourned the meeting at 8:08 pm.
