SPECIAL MEETING OF
BOARD OF EDUCATION

WEDNESDAY, August 30, 2006

The special meeting of the West Franklin USD #287 Board of Education was held Wednesday, August 30, 2006 at the Pomona High School Multi-Purpose Room in Pomona, Kansas.  

Board members present were:   Neal Baker, Keith Milliken, Randy Hermreck, Sheila Anderson, Mary Ann Parkin, Janie Dillon, and Nancy Reed.   Administrators present were:   Superintendent Susan Myers, Board Clerk Teresa Hawkins and Principals Eric Koppes, Susan Wildeman, Rick Smith, and Michael Dorst, and Curriculum Director Andy Azwell.    Also present were: Robin Nitcher, David Staley, Connie Wadkins, Virginia Cook, Lila Reekie, Chris Reekie, Cheryl Thomas, Betty Greer, Angela Harris, Betty Simpson, Cyndi Grimes, Robert Grimes, Kelly Slavens, Teri Webb, Mike Frack, and Merrita Combs

The meeting was called to order at 6:00 pm by President, Neal Baker.

Neal Baker turned the meeting over to Patrick Dunn, IBB Mediator.

Patrick Dunn reviewed and summarized the goal that the board has been working toward.   The board will now narrow the options to 1 or 2   and then have Superintendent Susan Myers gather more information on those options.

Questions were asked and answered regarding all options.   After much discussion the school board decided options 4 and 8 were the top two to be considered and compiled a list of things for Susan Myers to gather more information on.

Susan Myers was asked to gather the following information:

Plan IV:

• How K-5 split would work – boundary lines
• Where are the boundaries and what are the limits on the school board’s ability to move them
• Approximate cost of bussing
• Logistics of   bussing and practices
• Projection of class sizes by location and space (maps)
• Is this going to address the immediate financial issues
• Would it be possible to move the Learning Center back to Williamsburg
• What would happen to the farm
• What would happen to the football field and track at Williamsburg & Appanoose
• Parking
• Cost of addressing the track at Pomona

Plan VIII

• Logistics of bussing and practices
• Projection of class sizes by location & space (maps)
• Is this going to address the immediate financial issues
• Would it be possible to move the Learning Center back to Williamsburg
• What would happen to the football field and track at Williamsburg & Appanoose

The board took a 10 minute break at 6:50 pm

Susan Myers will also gather information on a 4 day week, including the cost savings and the effects on academics

Next meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, September 27, 2006 at 6:00 pm in the Pomona High School multi-purpose room.

Public comment session began at 7:40 pm.  

President Neal Baker adjourned the meeting at 8:00 pm.
