Math Grant to Partner with Washburn University

The West franklin School district will participate in a staff development grant through Washburn University. Teachers in grades 5-8 will have an opportunity to attend a summer workshop at Washburn and work with a math mentor during the 2006-07 school year.

  Significant improvement in mathematics performance
   


  Improved understanding of fundamental content knowledge embedded in Kansas Math standards
   
  Increased skill in reshaping curriculum and instruction base on the standards
   


  Increased use of formative and summative assessment as a guide to develop instruction
   

  Increased confidence among teachers in their ability to teach to grades 5-8 Math Standards
   


  Improved ability among teachers to implement instructional strategies designed to improve mathematical performance among historically under served and underrepresented students
   

  Involvement among participating teachers in technology-assisted collaboration and professional development
   


  Development of teachers as district level leaders who support development of mathematics knowledge and skill among peers
   

  Increased involvement among families in improving student learning in mathematics
   
Teachers participating in the grant program are Greg Butler, Brian Campbell, Barb Engel, Matt Parenti, Angie Corwine, Paula Howard, Stacia Scott, Jeanette Walters, Angela Harris and Phyllis Cunningham. The staff is very happy to have received and be able to participate in this grant.
